HOW A LITHOPHANE WORKS
A lithophane represents an image with areas of different thickness. When a suitable print is lit from behind, thinner areas let more light through and thicker areas let less through, revealing the picture.
This tool turns image brightness into a flat-backed 3D relief. It exports geometry as STL; the file does not contain the original full-color photo as a texture.

CHOOSE A GOOD PHOTO
A focused photo with recognizable shapes and a useful range of light and dark areas gives the relief a better starting point. The final appearance still depends on scale, material, printer and backlighting.
Choose a photo where faces are large, in focus and distinct from the background. Avoid faces that are very dark or lost in shadows.
Clear eyes, facial features and a recognizable silhouette help a pet remain easy to identify in the relief.
Look for clear shapes and separation between light and dark areas. Dense scenery and tiny details may blend together.
High-contrast photos and simple artwork can work well. Color photos are also accepted; the tool uses their brightness information.
FIND A PRACTICAL SETTING
Detail controls how finely the source image is sampled when building the relief mesh. It is an image sampling value, not a physical measurement or printer setting.
FROM DIGITAL STL TO A PHYSICAL PRINT
Open the downloaded STL in your preferred slicer. Set the finished size there, then review thickness, orientation, mesh integrity and print settings for your machine. Light-colored or light-transmitting materials are commonly explored for backlit displays.
This tool creates a flat lithophane relief. It does not make a lamp, frame, enclosure, curved panel or complete display assembly. Test material and lighting before a final print.
PHOTO-INSPIRED PROJECTS
Use a photo you have the right to process as a starting point for a personal print or display. For clear results, keep the main subject easy to recognize at the intended size.
Pet keepsake or memorial
Family portrait gift
Birthday or celebration memory
Travel and landscape memento
Small desk display
Wedding or anniversary keepsake
Frames, lamps and other lighting accessories are separate projects; this tool exports the flat STL relief only.
BROWSER-BASED CONVERSION
The browser uses the photo's brightness to build the STL geometry. This workflow does not ask an AI model to invent or reinterpret the image and does not submit the photo to an AI generation provider.

A lithophane is an image represented by different material thicknesses. When a suitable print is illuminated from behind, thinner sections transmit more light and thicker sections transmit less, forming a visible picture.
Upload a PNG, JPG or WebP image, choose the mesh detail, and generate the lithophane. Download the STL, then inspect and prepare it in your preferred 3D printing software.
The workspace accepts PNG, JPG/JPEG and WebP images up to 10 MB.
Yes. The generator uses image brightness to create relief geometry. The downloaded STL does not preserve the full-color photo as printable texture information.
A focused photo with a clear subject, recognizable details and useful light-dark contrast is a good starting point. Very blurry, dark or low-contrast images may be harder to recognize.
Yes. Use a clear photo with recognizable eyes and facial features, choose a detail value, and generate an STL for a keepsake or display project.
Yes. Personal portraits can be converted into thickness-based reliefs. Check that faces are clear and large enough for your planned print size.
The tool exports an STL geometry file. It contains the relief mesh, not the original full-color photo or a color texture.
Not necessarily. Inspect dimensions, thickness, orientation, mesh integrity and slicer settings for your printer before printing.
The web workspace has no physical width or height control. Scale the STL in compatible 3D software or a slicer, and check how scaling affects thickness and printability.
The current generator calculates thickness from image brightness using a fixed conversion. It does not offer separate minimum- or maximum-thickness controls.
It controls how finely the source image is sampled to build the mesh. The available range is 24–128 and the default is 96. It is not a millimeter dimension, nozzle size or layer height.
No. Higher values create denser geometry, but the visible result also depends on the photo, print size, printer, material and slicing settings.
No. This workflow currently creates a flat-backed relief. It does not make curved, cylindrical, spherical or lamp-wrap designs.
The flat STL can be a starting point for a separately designed backlit display. This tool does not create a lamp, enclosure, fixture or mounting system.
You can generate and download an STL without owning a printer. To make a physical lithophane, you will need suitable printing equipment or a print service.
Light-colored or translucent filament is commonly explored for backlit lithophanes. Appearance depends on material, thickness, printer and print settings.
This tool creates brightness-based geometry. It does not generate color layers or components for a specialized full-color printing workflow.
Yes. After generation, the workspace displays an interactive 3D mesh preview that you can rotate. Use your slicer for print preparation and detailed inspection.
No. The preview shows the STL geometry and does not simulate how light passes through a physical print. Material, thickness, printer settings and light source affect the final appearance.
Local conversion does not deduct additional credits, but tool access requires a qualifying paid Create3DOnline account with a positive credit balance.
The conversion processes the selected photo locally in your browser and does not send it to an AI generation provider. Account access checks are handled separately.
Use the STL subject to the rights you hold to the source image and applicable terms. Upload only images you own or have permission to process.
Image to Lithophane turns image brightness into a flat-backed thickness relief for a backlit photo project. Photo to STL uses AI-based reconstruction to estimate a three-dimensional object from a picture.
The browser workflow is designed for compatible modern browsers on desktop operating systems. Performance depends on your device, browser and source image.
No. The tool uses image brightness and local geometry processing to create the STL from your photo; it does not generate new image content with AI.
